BY OUR CELEBRITY REPORTER

Mark Frith, editor of Britain’s popular celebrity-gossip magazine Heat, is resigning from his job in order to write a “tell-all” book about the world of show business.

Heat, launched in 1999 as a general-interest entertainment magazine, became one of the highest-selling magazines in the United Kingdom by 2004. The magazine – which dishes out a mix of celebrity news, gossip, fashion, reviews of movies and music, TV listings and major celebrity interviews – is primarily targeted at women.

Mark Frith, who has been editing Heat since 2000, has bagged a book deal that will enable him to publish the “secrets" contained in a diary he kept during the eight years as the head of the gossip magazine. After Frith took over, the sales of the magazine had jumped to over 500,000 copies a week.

According to the British media, The Celeb Diaries – Tears, Tantrums and Excess by Mark Frith promises to reveal details about his encounters with such celebrities as the Beckhams, Jude Law, and Geri Halliwell. There will also be stories on Amy Winehouse, Jonathan Ross, Will Young, and Ewan McGregor, besides a tiff with Gordon Brown at Downing Street.

Mark Frith’s diaries are to be published in the autumn of 2008 by the Ebury Press, which released Piers Morgan’s two memoirs titled The Insider and Don’t You Know Who I Am. (Piers Morgan is a former editor of British tabloid newspapers News of the World and Daily Mirror. He is best known in the United States as a judge on the NBC show America’s Got Talent.)

Jake Lingwood, a senior executive of Ebury Press, was quoted as commenting about Mark Frith’s forthcoming book The Celeb Diaries – Tears, Tantrums and Excess, “The celebrity culture that Heat kickstarted has become so dominant that the inside track on how it came about, what deals were struck, and who said what to whom, is a brilliant media story. The public are going to be fascinated to hear about what really goes on in the celebrity game."
