Manisha Koirala to wed Nepali businessman Samrat Dahal

It’s official. Manisha Koirala, Nepal’s most famous export to India, has decided to tie the knot with Samrat Dahal, a Nepali businessman.

The 40-year-old actress, the daughter of one of the most powerful political families in Nepal, will say “I do” to Dahal at a ceremony in Kathmandu on June 19.

The wedding is expected to be a three-day extravaganza that is expected to see the who’s who of Kathmandu rub shoulders with Bollywood stars. The guest list is likely to include deposed King Gyanendra and former Queen Komal. Nothing has been finalized, but it is said that the swayambar may be on June 17, the mehendi on June 18 and the wedding ceremony on June 19.

Manisha, presently in Kerala shooting for a Telugu film, will be back in Kathmandu on Friday.

The Manisha-Samrat courtship dates back to a couple of years. Samrat, the youngest of three siblings, completed his education in the United States and now has a company dealing in alternative energy. He is the son of Surendra Dahal, the owner of Leather Wings.

The father of the groom said the decision on where to set up home – Kathmandu, Mumbai or New York –  rested with his son and daughter-in-law.

“Mutual acquaintances told me about a week ago that Manisha Koirala was getting married in Nepal,” Nepali film director Dipendra Khanal said to IANS. His upcoming film Dharma marks the return of the actress to the Nepali film industry nearly two decades after she left.

Manisha was also in Nepal last month to attend the last rites of her grand-uncle Girija Prasad Koirala. She was asked about her wedding plans at a press meet, but she managed to dodge all questions.

Manisha comes from a family rooted in Nepal’s politics. Her grandfather, B P Koirala, was the first elected prime minister of Nepal. Two of her granduncles were also prime ministers. Her aunt is the deputy prime minister of Nepal while two uncles are members of parliament. The actress has, as yet, shown no inkling to join politics.

Her father, Prakash Koirala, was a minister in King Gyanendra’s cabinet, but was expelled by his Nepali Congress party that led the pro-democracy movement against the king.

In 2006, she campaigned for her father’s party in the municipal election. The election was boycotted by all major parties and led to her films being banned in Nepal by the Maoists.
