Pop star Madonna is hosting a top-notch fashion show in New York, the United States, to raise funds to help orphans in Malawi in Africa.
She has teamed up with famous fashion label Gucci to for the fund-raising event.
Madonna is scheduled to host the fashion show to open Gucci’s new store on New York’s Fifth Avenue on February 6, 2008.
In a statement, Madonna said she is
hoping to raise at least $2 million
(£1 million) for the United Nations
International Children’s Emergency
Fund
(UNICEF) as well as Raising Malawi,
the charity she co-founded, from the
dinner, music performance and party.
Madonna founded Raising Malawi in 2006 with a view to aiding about 1 million orphans in Malawi, a nation in southern Africa.
“I am grateful that Gucci is joining forces with me to bring attention to a country with millions of children in desperate need of our help,” the statement from Madonna read. “Raising Malawi has already done tremendous work in helping these children, but we have much more to do and this event will surely bring us closer to our goal.”
Co-hosting the high-profile fashion event will be celebrities such as Adrien Brody, Arpad Busson, Salma Hayek, Francois-Henri Pinault, Téa Leoni, Lucy Liu, Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher, and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Madonna and her husband Guy Ritchie are planning to adopt a boy aged 2, David Banda, from Malawi. The adoption process has started and Banda has been taken out of an orphanage in October 2006.
In September 2007, a social worker from Malawi had gone to Madonna and Guy Ritchie's place in order to assess how Banda is coping in his new family.
The process of adoption of the boy had given rise to a controversy, but Madonna has repeatedly denied accusations that she had used her celebrity status to skip red tape during the adoption process.
If all goes well, the formal adoption of David Banda by Madonna and Guy Ritchie would be finalised in early 2008, say media reports.
