Keira Knightley brushes aside fame as being overrated

Hollywood actress Keira Knightley has warned actors who seek fame and are obsessed with being a celebrity that fame is overrated.

The star of the hugely successful movie The Pirates of the Caribbean admits that she cannot understand the hype regarding her celebrity status.

Keira Knightley, 22, told Britain’s Radio Times: “It frightens me when kids go ‘I want to be famous.’ Why? Because you want to go into a restaurant? You know what? If you book, you can get into a restaurant. I’ve got good genes! OK, I’m on the cover of a magazine, but somebody does the hair, and the make-up and airbrushes. It’s not me, it’s something other people have created.”

In fact, she went on to advise young people seeking fame and fortune to “go and work on the stock market.”

Saying that her gorgeous-looking face is “the result of airbrushing and makeup,” Keira Knightley warns her fans that they should not be obsessed with her looks.

The Oscar-nominated actress agreed with critics who said her acting in her debut film Bend It Like Beckham was bad. “I completely agreed on every level. I didn’t go to drama school, so I didn’t get the training. It was difficult to get over that.”

Earlier in 2007, Keira Knightley said she had considered quitting acting because of the pressures of fame.

She said she liked to watch films from 50 years ago because she prefers not to know about the actors’ private lives. “The magic is in the screen, not knowing what’s behind it, because that ruins the magic,” Keira Knightley went on.

Her movie, Atonement, opens the Venice Film Festival later in August 2007, where it is contending for the event’s top prize, the Golden Lion.

Atonement, based on a novel by Ian McEwan, is directed by Joe Wright. The movie had won four Oscar nominations in 2006, including a best actress nomination for Keira Knightley.

The British actress agrees that she had come a long way since her breakthrough role in Bend It Like Beckham (2002).

Of the movie Atonement, Keira Knightley says: “It’s the first film I’ve done where I’ve actually felt any confidence whatsoever.”
