In continuing reverses in the
court, American pop star Britney
Spears has been ordered to pay a
majority of her ex-husband’s legal
fees in the couple’s ongoing custody
dispute for their two children.
Scott Gordon, Los Angles Superior
Court Commissioner, ordered Britney
Spears on November 6, 2007, to pay her
ex-husband Kevin Federline $120,000 as
attorney costs.
According to court documents obtained
by celebtv.com, Mark Vincent
Kaplan, Kevin Federline’s attorney,
had on October 10, 2007, filed a
request with the court seeking
$160,000 from Britney Spears to meet
Federline’s expenses, on the ground of
disparity of income between Britney
Spears and Kevin Federline.
Kaplan had argued that his client had
already paid $31,900 in attorney fees
and was “in immediate and dire need of
more attorney fees.”
The law in California State stipulates
that the parties involved in a custody
dispute have equal access to legal
representation, with the weight of the
access being distributed based on
incomes.
Mark Vincent Kaplan argued that Kevin
Federline is a “self-employed
performing artiste who does not earn
any income.”
While issuing the order, Los Angles
Superior Court Commissioner Scott
Gordon cited the “disparity between
the parties’ income” and that “the
vast majority of the litigation deals
with Britney Spears’s conduct” as the
reason he thinks Britney Spears should
pay Kevin Federline’s legal bills.
According to court documents made
public a week ago, Kevin Federline got
over a half million dollars in 2006,
mainly from entertainment and
endorsement deals. He earned $3,300 in
royalties in 2006 for his debut song
Popozao.
However, excluding business expenses,
Kevin Federline was left with a meager
$7,436 in 2006. The monthly income of
Britney Spears is about $737,000. The
court documents show that, like their
incomes, Britney’s spending habits
also vary.
Britney spends $102,000 on
entertainment, gifts, and vacation;
$49,267 on mortgage payments; $16,000
on clothes; $4,758 on eating out; and
$2,500 on telephone bills.
In comparison, the court papers
showed, Kevin Federline’s expenses
include $5,000 on entertainment, gifts
and vacation; $7,500 on rent; $2,000
on clothes; $1,500 on eating out; and
$750 on telephone bills.
As of now, Kevin Federline gets
$20,000 every month from Britney as
spousal support. Apart from this,
Kevin receives $15,000 every month as
child support in keeping with the
divorce settlement.
Kevin Federline has been given
temporary custody of the two sons –
San Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1.
The support from Britney Spears is
will end on November 15, 2007.
