Qatar Airways launches flight to Alexandria

BY OUR AVIATION CORRESPONDENT

11 June, 2005: Qatar Airways has launched a scheduled service to the the port city of Alexandria, the carrier’s third destination in Egypt. The carrier intends to operate three non-stop flights a week from Doha the port city, with an Airbus A320 in a two-class configuration of 12 seats in First and 132 in Economy.

Qatar Airways had earlier launched services to Cairo and Luxor from Doha.

Alexandria is the 64th destination on Qatar Airways global network, operated from its Doha hub and the second of three new flight routes of Qatar Airways' summer 2005 flying programme.

To celebrate the new routes, Qatar Airways is offering members of its Privilege Club frequent flyer programme with double Q-miles for the first full month of the flights.

Qatar Airways is also offering complimentary coach transfers for passengers between Alexandria and Cairo.

Known as the 'Pearl of the Mediterranean', Alexandria is Egypt's second largest city and main port, and is also home to the ancient relics of the underwater city of Cleopatra's Palace. The city is located around 160 miles from the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

"Cairo and Luxor have proved to be highly successful for Qatar Airways attracting both business and leisure travelers. So it was only natural to expand our business in Egypt by adding Alexandria as our third point in the country and serve the growing needs of our passengers," Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker said.

"Many of our passengers will be travelling by air from neighbouring Middle East markets to Egypt, but also from our destinations across Asia and in South Africa," he said.

The flight QR512 departs Doha International Airport at 11.45 am on Saturday and arrives in Alexandria at 3.15 pm, the same day (local time). On Sunday and Thursday, flight QR512 departs Doha at 1 pm to arrive in the Egyptian city at 4.30 pm. In the return direction, flight QR513 departs Alexandria at 4.15 pm to arrive in Doha at 7.40 pm. On Sunday and Thursday, flight QR 513 departs Alexandria to arrive at the Doha International Airport at 8.55 pm, the same day, local time.
