April 21, 2007: Reiki, pronounced
rei-kee, is the Japanese generic name for
Universal Life Force energy. The kanji (Japanese
alphabet) definition for Reiki is universal,
transcendental spirit; the mysterious power, the
essence.
Ki is the Life Force energy, akin to the chi of
Chinese acupuncture, light to Christians, praana
in Sanskrit, and bioplasmic energy to Russian
researchers.
Reiki – an ancient science of healing that lay
hidden in the Tibetan Sutras for thousands of
years – was rediscovered and systematised by Dr
Mikao Usui, a Christian monk of Japan, in mid-19th
century. Reiki is a simple yet an extraordinarily
potent tool to heal oneself and others as well as
develop conscious awareness of that is the very
key to enlightenment and empowerment.
Reiki helps you experience life as it truly
happens and look at it fresh and new each day,
without letting preconceived notions and old
patterns to impede you. And, as with most things,
Reiki must be experienced to be appreciated.
The beauty of Reiki – the practice of laying of
hands – lies mostly in its simplicity. Almost
anybody can perform it. The only tool one needs to
treat are one’s two hands. Simply put, Reiki is an
abundance of Divine Grace that is freely available
to anyone open to receiving it.
A Reiki Master is not just a teacher. The Master
must practise what he/she teaches; only then can
the Master really heal himself /herself and others
– since you can give only what you have.
How does Reiki heal?
The answer to this lies beyond the mere
corporal and the palpable. Reiki practitioners
believe that we are alive because Life Force is
flowing through us – both within the physical body
and also around us in a field of Energy called
aura. This Life Force nourishes the body’s organs
and cells and helps perform their vital functions.
A disruption of flow of life force results in a
fall in the function of one or more of the organs.
Negative thoughts, emotions and responses also
block the flow of Life Force.
Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts
and charging them with positive energy – causing
the negative energy to break away. Reiki clears,
straightens and heals the energy pathways,
allowing Life Force to flow in a healthy and
natural manner. In the process, a Reiki treatment
turns out to be a wonderful, glowing experience
for both the healer and the healee.
Reiki affects each individual in a personal way.
The primary focus of treatment will be on the
painful or troublesome areas of the body as well
as the endocrine system. The state of mind has to
be very much reckoned with since the causal level
of physical diseases rests with the mind.
At once gentle and powerful, Reiki helps in
healing a variety of ills, including serious
physical and mental conditions, cuts and bruises,
fatigue, insomnia, impotence, poor memory, lack of
confidence, as well as a host of psychosomatic and
somatopsychic maladies.
Even as Reiki is essentially ‘spiritual’ in
nature, it is not a religion or a system of
belief. So no special mental preparation or
direction is needed to receive treatment. You only
need to have a desire to receive and accept the
Universal Live Force Energy.
Be it self-treatment or treating others, once the
initial intention of treatment has been completed
and the hands placed on the body, Energy will be
drawn of its own accord without any further
intense focus on the part of the healer. In other
words, once the intention to start a treatment is
clear, and the due process set in motion, Reiki
will be automatically activated.
In other words, Reiki has a mind of its own, as it
were, and knows where exactly to go and what to
do.
One of the greatest gains of Reiki is
self-treatment. Besides getting cured of one’s
physical and mental ills, self-treatment is a
highly effective technique for total relaxation
and stress release.
Like in the case of Praanic Healing, Reiki can be
used for distant (absentee) healing, and has also
found to work on mechanical devices that have
broken down – such as a stopped wristwatch or a
jammed lock.
What makes Reiki different from other ‘paranormal’
healing methods is the Attunement, or the
Initiation – which is in fact the core of the Usui
system of natural healing. Reiki is not taught in
the manner other healing techniques are taught –
it is transferred to the student by the Master
during Initiation.
While anyone can lay one’s hands on another and
help hasten the healing process by transferring
magnetic energy, Initiation fine-tunes the
physical and ‘etheric’ bodies, enabling opening of
the energy centres, or the various chakra, and
thus creating a special and permanent link between
the student and the Reiki sources.
Initiation alone, however, is of little
consequence – the fruits of Initiation must be
nurtured throughout life just as Initiation itself
is a blessing for a lifetime, according to Reiki
experts.
There are three degrees of Reiki empowerment in
Usui Shiki Ryoho (the Usui system of natural
healing). Initiation at all three levels, which
can be transmitted by a qualified and trained
Master, are followed by a 21-day ‘cleansing
period’ during which stored up emotions and
memories are released, which is needed for further
growth.
Initiation also acts as a powerful spiritual
experience and can also enhance psychic
sensitivity and, in some instances, lead to
mystical experiences. The first-degree Initiation
is intended mainly for opening up the physical
body to accept (channel) greater quantities of
Life Force Energy. The second-degree Initiation
provides a quantum leap in Energy level, at least
four times greater than the first degree. And, the
third-degree Attunement is meant to initiate a
Master – it activates the Master Symbol to make
one enable others to empower themselves.
While other forms of therapy takes months or years
of training for the practitioner, Reiki takes
rather a short time to learn. However, to a person
very attached to the intellect as a means of
learning and is conditioned to the notion that
learning takes time, Reiki can be disconcerting.
In short, Reiki is a process of empowerment that
often defies intellectual reasoning.
Reiki blends happily with a variety of therapies.
The effects of allopathic, naturopathic,
homoeopathic and ayurvedic treatments can be
enhanced with Reiki.
The five principles of Reiki
Mikao Usui developed the five principles of
Reiki based on the importance of a person’s
participation in his own life healing process and
on the belief that what you think is truly what
you are.
The five principles of Reiki are:
* Just for today, I will live the attitude of
gratitude
* Just for today, I will not worry
* Just for today, I will not anger
* Just for today. I will do my work honestly
* Just for today, I will show love and respect for
every living being
