2 July, 2005: Cold Stone Creamery cake batter ice-creams have a health hazard, warns US Food and Drug Administration. The FDA bumped into the contaminated product after 14 people in Ohio, Washington, Minnesota and Oregon took ill after consuming the contaminated ice-cream.
Salmonella Typhimurium is an organism, which can trigger serious and sometimes
deadly infections in small children, frail or elderly people, and those with
weak immune systems. Healthier ones may only suffer short-term
symptoms, like high fever, vomiting, severe headache, abdominal
pain, nausea and diarrhea. Long-term complications of the food poisoning can include arthritis.
FDA said that an outbreak of Salomnella Typhimurumum in several parts of US may be associatd with this the "cake batter" ice-cream sold from sevearl Cold Stone Creamery shops in the US. FDA has already asked Cold Stone Creamery to withdraw the contaminated cake batter ice-cream. The shops have removed the item to avoid further food-poisoning. Authorities have advised customers who have brought the Cold Stone Creamery cake batter ice-creams not to eat them; but dispose them immediately to prevent infection.
Many patients reporting this illness also reported consuming "cake batter" ice cream at a Cold Stone Creamery shortly before their illness started.
Authorities said that those who believe they have become ill as a result of eating this ice cream should consult their doctor immediately.
According to Dr. Robert Brackett, Director of the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, "FDA is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and our state partners to determine the source of the contaminated product and is issuing this alert to protect the public."
