30th September, 2005:
Hungry in space? Have some noodles.
Japanese noodle maker Nissin Foods is set to shoot a
commercial aboard the international space station (ISS) on its
cup noodles. The commercial will be directed from Earth, at
the Mission Control Centre outside Moscow.
Expedition 11, which carries three humans to the ISS is set to
leave in a few hours from Baiokunur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
The crew includes two astronauts and one space
tourist-scientist, who has paid $20 million to cover the
travel expenses. Russian rocket Soyuz will take the explorers
to the International Space Station.
The commercial will have a hungry cosmonaut in its sales
pitch. Nissin, which has a fancy for the other world, already
has a noodle brand called UFO.
To shoot the commercial, JAXA (Japanese Aerospace Exploration
Agency) is sending a high-deficition camera along with the
crew of the space travellers. The Nissin noodle commercial is
expected to be aired in November. This is part of Japan's
space travel authorities to commercialise and promote space
travel. The camera wil be left at the ISS for possible
commericial use later.
The Nissin campaign will have the tagline "Cup Noodle No
Border."
In 2002, Nissin Foods announced its plan to make "Space Ram" a
ramen noodle which the company said astronauts can eat in
space. Nissin is the world's largest maker of instant noodles.
