Contraceptives manufacturer Hindustan Latex Limited has announced that it is changing its name to HLL Lifecare Limited. The renaming comes about as the company moves to co-relate with its surge forward in the area of healthcare, officials said.
Senior officials said that the company set up by Government of India under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 1966, is taking a new name – HLL Lifecare Ltd – as an organization whose activities encompass complete health care for all. HLL is today on the forefront of bringing quality healthcare and contraceptive aids at an affordable price to millions around the globe.
According to the Chairman and Managing Director of HLL, M. Ayyappan, “HLL’s transformation has been total, having traversed a long distance over the past four decades, from a modest condom packing unit to a Condom manufacturer – a Nirodh company – to an organization manufacturing the widest range of Contraceptives in the world, and emerging today as one of the major providers of health care products and services. This journey of transformation and widening of operational areas has prompted the adoption of the new name – HLL Lifecare Limited, which will communicate our commitment in the much wider spectrum of Life Care, touching the lives of millions across the world.”
HLL’s tryst with the nation’s family planning programme began on 5 April 1969 with the commencement of operations at its Peroorkada facility in Trivandrum, built in collaboration with Okamoto Industries Inc., of Japan, with an annual installed capacity to produce 144 million condoms. Commencing with this rudimentary production portfolio, HLL’s annual production capacity today has increased to a staggering 1.316 billion condoms.
From a single production facility in 1969, HLL has today five manufacturing units located across the country with state of the art facilities. These are: 1.Perookada Factory, Thiruvananthapuram (Condoms) 2.Akkulam Factory, Thiruvananthapuram (Healthcare Devices) 3. Kanagala Factory, Belgaum (Condoms and Pharmaceutical products) 4. Kakkanad Factory, Kochi (set up in the SEZ) (Female and Male condoms) and 5. Manesar Factory, Gurgaon, (Rapid Diagnostic Kits).
Over the past two decades, through consistent efforts, HLL has put in place a very vibrant marketing wing, which services half a million retail outlets, covering 3500 hospitals, reaching 15,000 medical professionals, 1500 stock points, 700 frontline team members placed in every town of the country, offices in all metros and mini metros and many more, which very few companies can claim or match. HLL today exports its range of Condoms, Blood Bags to over 115 countries around the world.
The HLL range includes a host of brands such as ‘Moods’ and ‘Crezendo’ Condoms, ‘Saheli’, the popular once-a-week non-hormonal oral pill, ‘Hincryl’- Surgical Sutures, HL ‘Haemopack’- blood transfusion bags, ‘Ceredrain’- Hydrocephalus Shunts, ‘Preventol’- Emergency Contraceptive Pills, ‘Confidom’/ ‘Velvet’- Female condoms. HLL is unique in being able to offer over 15 variants of its Moods brand of condoms, which include the ribbed, dotted, allnight, flavoured, scented and glow condoms.
Recently HLL commenced the export of its once-a-week Pill in the name of ‘Ivyfemme’ which in Spanish means ‘friendship flower’, to Peru in South America – the first pharma product to be registered by HLL abroad.
