An increased waist size could mean an increased risk of heart failure, says a study.
The study, conducted by Dr. Emily Levitan and her colleagues at the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Research Unit at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), focused on the need to maintain a healthy weight to avoid heart ailments.

According to the study, even when the Body Mass Index (BMI) is in the normal range, increased waist size could lead to heart failure among middle-aged and older men and women.

The study has made use of data from research conducted in Sweden. The first study studied around 37,000 women aged 48 to 83, while the other has more than 43,000 men aged between 45 and 79.

All the participants had to fill in the details regarding their waist circumference and other vital statistics.

While, around 34 per cent of the women were overweight, 11 per cent were obese whereas among men, 46 per cent were overweight and 10 per cent were obese.
The subjects were then observed over seven years from 1998 to 2004 for any occurance of first time heart failure.

According to the initial analysis, either the BMI, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, or the waist-to-height ratio was related to higher rates of heart failure.

Meanwhile, in the second stage, they discovered that for women with a BMI falling within the normal range of 25, an increase in waist circumference of even 10 cm could result in a 15 percent risk of heart failure.

Among men with a BMI of 25, the same increase would mean a 16 percent higher risk of heart failure. For men, the BMI increase by one point was linked to a 4 percent increase in chances of heart failure regardless of waist size.

But among women, it resulted in risks for heart failure only among those with larger waists. The study also found that BMI-heart failure risk connection became less sensitive with age.

An Olay Regenerist anti-ageing skin cream commercial featuring Eve Cameron, the beauty director of She magazine, has been banned for misleading viewers.

The advertisement claims that the “pentapeptides” in the Olay Regenerist anti-aging cream help in reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

The commercial created by ad agency Saatchi & Saatchi shows Cameron citing a study presented at the World Congress of Dermatology that claims that Procter & Gamble’s Olay Regenerist skin care cream reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles because of the presence of “pentapeptides” in the cream.

The Advertising Standards Authority, which received 46 complaints about the advertisement that it was misleading and offensive, ruled that viewers would be unfamiliar with the way scientific data was validated.

In the advertisement, Cameron has said that women who are not ready for cosmetic injections, but want dramatically younger-looking skin, should try Olay Regenerist with pentapeptides.

“Women who aren’t ready for cosmetic injections constantly ask me to recommend a skin cream that really works. So I was excited when this study, revealed at the World Congress of Dermatology, showed that pentapeptides are effective in reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles,” Cameron was quoted as saying.

Four issues were taken into consideration in the 46 complaints made. First being the implication that Olay could deliver the same benefits as injections.

“Many viewers objected that the ad was misleading and offensive, because they believed it implied cosmetic injections were a natural or inevitable next step for women as they got older,” the ASA reasoned.

A doctor amongst the viewers complained that there was not a satisfying scientific evidence that pentapeptides reduced lines and wrinkles.

The doctor also argued that the advertisement misleadingly implied that the scientific community supported the paper presented at the WCD.

ASA said they considered the claim “pentapeptides are effective at reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. So if you’re not ready for cosmetic injections, but want dramatically younger looking skin, try Olay Regenerist with penatapeptides,” a strong performance claim linked to a specific ingredient.

An ASA expert also said that there were methodological gaps in the management of results and interpretation of data presented in the published paper (by P&G).

However P&G said it had carried out two studies into Olay Regenerist, which showed that the level of pentapeptides in the product “significantly reduced the appearance of lines and wrinkles.”

One of the studies was published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science in 2005. The paper on pentapeptides was also presented at the WCD and was “entirely factual,” P&G added.

The ASA also took into consideration a statistical fact that the majority of the 2,000 women who took part in the cream tests reported that pentapeptides had ‘no effect’ on the skin.

“We understood that in the published paper the majority of test subjects themselves reported no effect for pentapeptides and in the unpublished paper the assessing dermatologist reported no effect,” an expert at ASA said.

ASA has said that P&G had not provided evidence sufficient to support the claim that pentapeptides are effective at reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

The ASA also said, “Although we acknowledged that, as a moisturizing product, Regenerist was likely to temporarily reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, we considered that, to substantiate this type of claim, the results from studies should be ingredient specific, perceptible to the consumer, and consistently in favour of that claim.”

Proctor and Gamble Ltd, which owns Olay, admitted it had no intention to imply a comparison with cosmetic injections.

Contraceptives manufacturer Hindustan Latex Limited has announced that it is changing its name to HLL Lifecare Limited. The renaming comes about as the company moves to co-relate with its surge forward in the area of healthcare, officials said.

HLL Lifecare Limited logo

HLL’s tryst with the nation’s family planning programme began on 5 April 1969 with the commencement of operations at its Peroorkada facility in Trivandrum, built in collaboration with Okamoto Industries Inc., of Japan, with an annual installed capacity to produce 144 million condoms. Commencing with this rudimentary production portfolio, HLL’s annual production capacity today has increased to a staggering 1.316 billion condoms.

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, the pharmaceutical company headquartered in Mumbai, India, has said it has received marketing rights in the United States for its Azathioprine 50-mg tablets, which are used to prevent rejection in kidney transplantation.

The company said that it would market the drug through Glenmark Generics Limited, its subsidiary based in the United States.

Azathioprine, the generic equivalent of Imuran tablets, is also indicated in the management of active rheumatoid arthritis to reduce signs and symptoms, according to the company.

Glenmark is authorised to distribute 130 SKUs in the United States.

At present, Glenmark has 40 Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) in various stages of approval process with the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

According to IMS Health, the international consulting and data services company that supplies the pharmaceutical industry with sales data and consulting services, total sales for Azathioprine for the 12-month period ending June 2008 was worth about US $36 million.

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals said it also has received approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration for distribution and marketing of Ranitidine tablets in the US market.

Ranitidine tablets are used to treat duodenal ulcers and gastric ulcers as well as erosive esophagitis.

The company says that “Ranitidine decreases acid in the stomach to help treat an ulcer or prevent one from developing; it also helps to decrease the stomach pain, diarrhea, and loss of appetite that ulcers can cause.”

Glenmark said it would soon start marketing and distribution of Ranitidine 150-mg and 300-mg tablets in the United States.

Ranitidine tablets are approved for eight separate indications, including the short-term treatment and maintenance of duodenal ulcer patients, the treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions, the short-term treatment and maintenance of gastric ulcer patients, treatment of GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux disease) and the treatment and maintenance of erosive esophagitis.

These varied treatment options, according to IMS Health, have contributed to the overall success of Ranitidine tablets achieving sales worth over US $41 million for the 12-month period ended June 2008.

Glenmark said it has currently 37 generic products authorised for distribution in the US market and that “it continues to identify and explore external development partnerships to supplement and accelerate the growth of the existing pipeline and portfolio.”
