May 20, 2005: Yemen's national airways Yemenia has recruited 45 Indian stewardesses to fill its vacant cabin crew vacancies from Delhi-based Frankfinn Institute of Air Hostess Training. This is first time in the history of aviation that an international airline has selected airhostesses and fight attendants from a single training institute.
The newly recruited staff have been flown to Saa’na, the capital of Yemen for training. Yemenia is also planning to recruit further cabin crew to fill vacancies for its operations; however, whether this would be India is yet to be finalised.
According to KS Kohli at Frankfinn Institute of Air Hostess Training, “It is for the first time in the Indian aviation history that an international airline has appointed air hostesses and fl ight stewards from a single training institute".
Even though it is regular practice for global airlines to recruit staff from India, this is the first time a massive recruit of this kind has happened, he claims.
Industry sources estimate there could be 4,000 cabin crew jobs up for grabs in the next few years with the aviation sector growing at over 27 per cent and more airlines, including that in India, starting services on new and unscheduled routes.
Meanwhile, the airline is also planning to add more flights to Bahrain. Yemenia would acquire two new Airbus A330-200 aircraft later this year and look into expanding its Bahrain operations. The carrier currently offers three flights per week to Bahrain under its summer schedule and two weekly flights in the winter schedule. The carrier had launched a weekly service from Dubai to Dhaka in Bangladesh on November 5, 2004.
Yemenia was founded in 1961 as Yemen Airways and was later renamed as Yemenia in 1978.
