OUR AVIATION CORRESPONDENT May 8, 2005:
The 'Common Man' is taking to the skies,
literally. Renowned cartoonist RK Laxman's "Common
Man" has been selected as the mascot for the
low-budget Indian airline Air Deccan. After
bringing a smile to his readers for 57 years, the
cartoon character is now the insignia of the
Bangalore-based airline.
The move comes as a deviation from the existing
practice of using famous personalities, film
actors, selecting celebrities or role models,
symbols or logos as insignia.
"The Common Man in Laxman's cartoons brings out an
element of courage and optimism. Since our vision
is to make every Indian fly at least once in a
lifetime, we are proud to select such a universal
personality as our brand ambassador," Air Deccan
chief executive officer GR Gopinath said.
The mascot of commoners, RK Laxman's Common Man,
symbolises the aspirations and dreams of over a
billion Indians.
Claiming that Air Deccan and Common Man share a
commonality as they both stand for the people,
Captain Gopinath said it was an honour to use
Laxman's mascot as brand ambassador.
Quoting India's famous cartoonist, Gopinath said
Laxman wanted every Indian to fly regardless of
their economic situation and agreed with the
airline's vision to empower every citizen to fly.
As the "people's airline," Air Deccan will begin
to sport the mascot of 'common man' on its
aircraft, tickets, boarding passes, billboards and
advertisements, including print and visual media.
The airline had entered into an agreement with the
Rasipuram Trust of Laxman to use his Common Man as
its brand ambassador.
