flydubai puts off planned flights to Lucknow, Coimbatore, Chandigarh

Sunday, July 12, 2009 10:40

flydubai, the low-fare airline based in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE),  has put off the proposed launch of its flights to Lucknow, Coimbatore, and Chandigarh in India because of what the airline described as “operational issues.” Dubai’s first low-cost carrier had announced that it would launch its operations in India with flights to Lucknow on July 13, 2009; to Coimbatore on July 14, 2009; and to Chandigarh on July 23, 2009. In early July 2009, flydubai had said that it was trying to work out the “final few pieces” of the flight it was planning for Chandigarh. Reports in the Indian media say that the Indian Air Force (IAF) refused flydubai to fly to Chandigarh airport, which is controlled by the IAF. The reports also had indicated that India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation, which regulates passenger flights in the country, failed in persuading the Indian Air Force to allow flydubai to operate late-night flights. In a statement, Ghaith Al Ghaith, chief executive officer of flydubai, apologised for having caused inconvenience to the customers who have booked flights to India. Al Ghaith added that India continues to be an “important market” for flydubai and that the airline expects to begin the flights soon. An announcement regarding the flights to India would be made in the near future. flydubai said it would contact all customers who have booked flights to India in the next few days and they would be given a full refund, apart from a voucher for a free return flight to India or anywhere on the flydubai network. The voucher is valid for travel till the end of November 2009.
