Southwest Airlines, the low-cost carrier based in Dallas, Texas, the United States, has announced that it will launch daily, non-stop flights from Denver International Airport (in Denver, Colorado), to Boston (Massachusetts), Reno (Nevada), and Spokane (Washington) in January 2010.In a statement, Southwest Airlines said it will operate 2 daily, direct round trips between Denver International Airport and Logan International Airport in Boston from January 10, 2010.
The airline will start one daily, non-stop round trip service between Denver International Airport and Reno-Tahoe International Airport, and between Denver International Airport and Spokane International Airport on January 10, 2010, itself.
Southwest Airlines has already started taking reservations for the new flights. The introductory fare from Boston to Denver International Airport is $99 each way.
In fact, Southwest Airlines had launched flights from Denver International Airport to Logan International Airport in Boston on August 16, 2009.
However, passengers from Denver bound for Boston now have to connect through Chicago Midway International Airport or through Baltimore-Washington International Airport.
Similarly, Southwest Airlines’ passengers from Denver heading for Spokane or Reno at present have to connect in another city.
Southwest Airlines had recently begun direct flights from St Louis to Boston.
Bob Jordan, executive vice-president (strategy and planning) of Southwest Airlines, said in the statement that Denver “has been, and will continue to remain” a focus market the carrier, which will add more flights to more places from Denver.
According to Bob Jordan, the passengers on the new daily, non-stop flights from Denver International Airport to Boston, Reno and Spokane can enjoy the luxury of leather seats and a lot of legroom.
The carrier had recently upgraded its gate areas and also made the boarding procedure more easy and efficient, Jordan added.
Earlier in September 2009, Southwest Airlines had introduced what it calls the ‘EarlyBird’ check-in service.
Southwest Airlines – which at present flies to 67 cities in 34 states in the United States – says it carries more domestic passengers in the country than does any other US-based airline.
Southwest Airlines had, in August 2009, made a $170-million bid to buy Frontier Airlines, the budget airline based in Denver, in order to pull it out of bankruptcy, but Republic Airways, headquartered in Indianapolis, was the winner in the auction.
According to aviation experts, if Southwest Airlines had won the bid to buy Frontier Airlines, the combined carrier would have accounted for flying 36% of passengers in Denver, leaving United Airlines with a share of about 37% of passengers.
