American Airlines, the world’s largest airline, and Sojern Incorporated, based in Omaha, Nebraska, the United States, have entered into a partnership to provide destination-specific information as well as offers via boarding passes.

Through the new partnership, the two companies will be providing destination-specific content via boarding passes which have been obtained through American Airlines’ online check-in service AA.com

This value-added service has been implemented on all domestic flights of American Airlines within the United States.

Passengers who check-in online will now receive information, including weather reports, restaurant options and activities as well as special discounts. And, this information is being provided at no extra cost to customers.

American Airlines and American Eagle Airlines are wholly owned subsidiaries of AMR Corporation. American Airlines, headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, the United States, adjacent to the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, is a founding member of the Oneworld airline alliance. American Airlines is the world’s largest airline in total passengers-miles transported and in passenger-fleet size; the second largest airline in terms of aircraft operated; and the second largest airline company in the world in terms of total operating revenues. The airline operates scheduled flights throughout the United States, as well as flights to Canada, Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, Japan, China, and India.

Sojern Incorporated said in a statement that the organisation teams up with the airline industry and the advertising sector “to enhance the travel experience by providing destination-specific information and offers via the boarding passes that travellers obtain through airline’s web check-in process.” Since its founding in September 2007, Sojern has secured partnerships with leading United States-based airlines such as Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Northwest Airlines, United Airlines, US Airways and, now, American Airlines. The company is funded by Norwest Venture Partners and Trident Capital.

Gordon Whitten, the founder of Sojern, explained in the statement: “The Sojern boarding pass not only offers relevant information for passengers at no additional cost but also provides a valuable opportunity for the advertising industry. Advertisers have the potential to reach the coveted traveller demographic. Companies now have the ability to speak to travellers at a time in which they know their content and offers will be relevant to passengers flying to a particular destination. Though the customers have the option to print the content or not, the majority print and enjoy the content and customer-focus groups have confirmed that they view it as a value-added service for their trip. Travellers should also rest assured that none of their personally identifiable information is shared.”
