Singapore Airlines, the government-owned national airline of Singapore, has started daily fights between Changi Airport in Singapore and Melbourne Airport in Australia using the Airbus A380 Superjumbo aircraft.

Melbourne has thus become the second city in Australia and the 6th city in Singapore Airlines’ network to have service using the Airbus A380 jetliner.

In fact, the Airbus A380 Superjumbo, the biggest passenger airliner in the world, made its first commercial flight with Singapore Airlines – from Singapore to Sydney on October 25, 2007.

At present, Singapore Airlines operates 21 weekly flights between Singapore City and Melbourne, including the new daily service using the Airbus A380 plane.

According to Huang Cheng Eng, executive vice-president of Singapore Airlines, the Airbus A380 Superjumbo stays very popular, notwithstanding the worldwide economic depression.

Singapore Airlines began using the Airbus A380 Superjumbo plane with flights between Singapore City and Sydney in Australia in October 2007. Later, the airline launched services with the Airbus A380 to London, Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong – and, now to Melbourne.

At present, Singapore Airlines’ fleet of aircraft includes 10 Airbus A380 Superjumbo planes, and the carrier has ordered 9 more Airbus A380 aircraft, with options on 6 more.

The Airbus A380 aircraft – nicknamed the Superjumbo – is a wide-body, double-deck, 4-engine airliner made by Airbus Industrie, which is the aircraft-manufacturing subsidiary of the European consortium European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS). It is the biggest passenger airliner in the world.

According to Airbus Industrie, the Airbus A380 Superjumbo aircraft has a design range of 15,200 kilometres (8,200 miles) and a cruising speed of Mach 0.85 (nearly  900 kilometres/hour, or 560 miles/hour, at cruising altitude.

Since the start of its maiden commercial flight from Singapore to Sydney on October 25, 2007, the Airbus A380 Superjumbo has carried over 1.8 million people on over 4,600 commercial flights.
