Paramount Airways, the all-business-class airline based in Chennai, India, has announced plans to add about 700 flights, within the next 2-3 months, to its network.

The carrier said it will also start international services from October 2010, when it takes delivery of its first Airbus 321 plane.

According to M Thiagarajan, managing director of Paramount Airways, the airline, which at present operates 1,900 flights a month, is aiming at adding 600-700 flights in about 3 months’ time.

Paramount Airways is considering enhancing its services to Delhi, the capital of India, from 7 flights a week at present to about 50 flights a week.

The airline also is planning to operate services from smaller Indian cities like Cooch Behar (West Bengal), Shillong (Meghalaya), and Ranchi (Jharkhand). Bringing smaller cities in the network of Paramount Airways is expected to be of advantage to the carrier’s planned international operations, Thiagarajan added.

Also, there are plans to expand operations across western India. Currently, Paramount Airways operates services to only 3 cities in western India.

Right now, there is no proposal for services to Mumbai because of problems related to infrastructure, according to Thiagarajan.

Paramount Airways will qualify to operate overseas services in October 2010, when the carrier completes the government’s mandatory requirement of an airline having been in operation for 5 years to fly abroad.

Earlier, Paramount Airways had announced that it will commence international services from early 2011.

The airline said it has ordered 10 Airbus planes, all of which it will receive by the end of 2012. The aircraft will be delivered in a batch of 3-2-3-2 every quarter, starting October 2010.

Thiagarajan said Paramount Airways will launch services from Colombo, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Bangkok. Flights to countries in West Asia and Africa will be added later.

He stressed that Paramount Airways won’t encounter any competition from other budget airlines flying to West Asia since Paramount’s services to West Asian will have only the premium-class.

According to Thiagarajan, Paramount Airways is the only Indian carrier that offers full business-class service at prices that are “comparable to the normal economy-class fares” of other airlines.” The overseas flights of Paramount also will have premium-class service, the airline’s managing director added.

Paramount Airways, which began operations in October 2005, at present flies to 21 destinations across India. It has a market share of 1.5%.

The airline, founded by the textile company Paramount Group, based in Madurai in Tamil Nadu, operates 5 aircraft – 2 Embraer 170 planes and 3 Embraer 175 planes. It plans to add 8 more planes to its fleet by the end of the current financial year, according to managing director Thiagarajan.
