The United States-based carriers Midwest Airlines and Frontier Airlines have announced a codeshare pact which enables each carrier to sell tickets on the flight of the other.

The codeshare agreement – between Midwest Airlines, the regional airline based in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, the United States, and Frontier Airlines, the low-fare carrier headquartered in Denver, Colorado, the United States – is set to become effective on August 30, 2009.

In a joint statement, the two airlines said that the codeshare pact would expand the network of Frontier Airlines by enabling its customers to connect to a flight of Midwest Airlines through Midwest’s hub in Milwaukee. All these flights will use the same Frontier Airlines code.

Customers of Midwest Airlines, the joint statement went on, would benefit from an expanded network by connecting on flights of Frontier Airlines and Lynx Aviation Lynx (a subsidiary of Frontier Airlines Holdings) in Denver.
The codeshare deal will enable members of frequent-flier programmes of both Midwest Airlines and Frontier Airlines to earn miles while flying the other airline’s routes.
According to the agreement, the ‘YX’ code of Midwest Airlines will be placed on the flights of Frontier Airlines – thereby letting customers of Midwest Airlines to connect in Denver to Frontier Airlines’ destinations in the Rocky Mountain region.

The ‘F9’ code of Frontier Airlines will be put on flights of Midwest Airlines – enabling customers of Frontier Airlines to connect in Milwaukee to Midwest Airlines’ flights throughout the Ohio Valley and the East Coast.
More details of the codeshare plan, including the names of cities which are available for the codeshare, would be announced later, the statement said.

Frontier Airlines flies to over 50 destinations in the United States, Mexico and Costa Rica. Frontier Airlines and AirTran Airways have what is described as an integrated marketing partnership, which offers passengers the facility to reach over 80 destinations in 4 with low fares.

Meanwhile, media reports say that Republic Airways Holdings, based in Indianapolis, the United States, is planning to buy Midwest Airlines and Frontier Airlines.
