India’s premier airline Kingfisher Airlines will start flying to Colombo, Sri Lanka from Chennai, Tamil Nadu and Bangalore, Karnataka, India from January 19, 2009.

The Kingfisher Airlines flight from Chennai arrive in Colombo 8.15am while the flight from Bangalore will arrive at 4.20 PM.

This is a bit of positive news – considering that private and government-owned airlines in India have been in the doldrums in 2008 due to high oil prices initially which forced them to raise prices, and saw an instant hit in bookings. So far, it does not look like 2009 will bring any major changes, but Kingfisher thinks that the flight to Colombo from India will be successful is a positive indication for sure.

Kingfisher Airlines is owned by liquor baron and Formula One team owner Vijay Mallya.

Kingfisher had two troublesome quarters in 2008-2009. Results of the third quarter have not been announced by Kingfisher. But the announcement of the new flights to Colombo from Bangalore and Chennai is indication that the third quarter results were definitely an improvement.

Kingfisher has announced plans to launch more new flights soon. A Bangalore-Dubai flight is to be announced in February 2009, and the month might also see a Mumbai-Bangkok and Bangalore-Bangkok flight.
