British Airways has stopped their direct flight services to London from Kolkata yesterday.
The last flight took off from Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport for the last time on Sunday morning. On the other hand Air India resumed their flights to Heathrow International Airport London via Delhi.
Passengers from Kolkata and staff were unhappy at the airline’s decision to terminate the services.
A Boeing 777, the last British Airways flight, with 272 passengers landed in the wee hours on Sunday and returned back to London four hours later.
British Airways started the service between London and Kolkata in the 30’s when it was known as the British Overseas Airways Corporation. The services continued intermittently till mid 80’s and stopped only to resume in 1993 by the name British airways between the two cities and Dhaka on tri-weekly basis.
Last year, British Airways officials said that the company will be suspending the services since the route was turning out to be of less profit.
Air India last year had withdrawn its Kolkata-London services last October but now has restarted on Sunday.
