In a statement, AirTran Airways, a subsidiary of AirTran Holdings, said the new daily services between Baltimore and Jacksonville will connect one of the busiest markets of AirTran Airways with an emerging outpost north of the airline’s headquarters in Orlando.

Tad Hutcheson, vice-president (marketing and sales) of AirTran Airways, said in the statement that Baltimore continues to be a crucial city in the network of AirTran Airways. The new service from Baltimore to Jacksonville – a popular tourist destination – is another example of the airline’s commitment to the community in Baltimore, according to Hutcheson.

Over a week ago, AirTran Airways had announced that it will start 2 flights a week – on Saturdays and Sundays – between Tampa International Airport, Florida, and Grand Rapids International Airport, Michigan, on June 12, 2010.

From May 4, 2010, on the Baltimore-Jacksonville route, AirTran Airways’ additional 2-flights a-day will leave Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) at 10:30 a.m. and 7:55 p.m. In the return direction, the twice-daily flights, bound for Baltimore, will take off from Jacksonville International Airport at 7:40 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Introductory fares on the Jacksonville-Baltimore-route will be $74 one-way, but the flights have to be booked by February 25, 2010, for travel through June 9, 2010.

At present, AirTran Airways is the second biggest airline at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport – operating as many as 51 non-stop daily flights through BWI.

On the Tampa-Grand Rapids route, from June 12, 2010, AirTran Airways flights (on Saturdays and Sundays) will leave Tampa International Airport in Florida at 4.14 p.m. and reach Grand Rapids International Airport in Michigan at 7.09 p.m. On the return leg, the flights will take off from Grand Rapids at 12.49 p.m. and land in Tampa at 3.34 p.m.

A few days ago, AirTran Airways had announced that it earned record revenues worth $134.7 million in 2009.

AirTran Airways operates over 700 daily flights from 67 cities in the United States, including flights from Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia and Reagan National Airport in Arlington, Virginia.

According to the airline’s statement, AirTran Airways is the only major airline with Wi-Fi on every flight. The carrier operates coast-to-coast service in North America, using its all-Boeing fleet of aircraft. AirTran’s other features include Business Class, assigned seating, and complimentary XM Satellite Radio on every flight.

According to the airport authorities, the new services by AirTran Airways should give a fillip to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), which had registered its 6th month of year-over-year growth, in a succession, in November 2009. Over 1.7 million passengers flew through BWI in 2009 – which is a 13% rise from November 2008.
