Air New Zealand has launched a new TV commercial, starring its crew members and staff, that has turned out to be very popular online. The advertisement had flight attendants, pilots and other crew member wearing body paint that looks like their regular uniform. The passengers were portrayed as surprised but delighted. The advertisement ends with a tag line that says: ‘Air New Zealand fares, what people see is what they get’.

The commercial is 45 seconds long.

The airline used a similar strategy to advertise ‘in-flight safety’ where people used seat belts and life jackets to conceal their private parts.

“Even if you fly with us quite a lot, we’d appreciate if you take… a second look,” says flight attendant Michaela in the video’s introductions. This video can also be seen on the company’s website nothingtohide.com.

This video was launched on June 29, 2009, on their Boeing 737 domestic 7 am flight from Auckland to Wellington. The video is 3 minutes and 28 seconds long.

There is nothing risqué  about the video, although it sounds sensational. Sensitive body parts are intelligently covered up using props or camera tricks.

According to CNN, every person playing the role in the video is actually playing themselves. Even the Air New Zealand CEO Rob Fyfe plays a cameo as a baggage handler in the video.

“We wanted to find a way to deliver these important pre-flight messages to our domestic travelers in a way that was genuine, engaging and fun,” Air New Zealand marketing manager Steve Bayliss said.

The New York Times quoted Air New Zealand’s Marketing Manager as saying, “The ‘Nothing to Hide’ commercial has been viewed around two million times on YouTube, and is the most-viewed clip to come out of New Zealand.”

More blooper videos that were taken during the making of the ad can be seen on their official website.
