The tourism sector in Christchurch, New Zealand is all set to have a huge boost with the low cost flights by Air Asia X flying into the city.
The flights will operate four times a week. The flights in the pipeline, which will start in April 2011, could be direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Christchurch, and may be available for as less as $200 one way, say reports. Tourism industry officials in Christchurch’s Queenstown are extremely excited about the range of possibilities that the new flights will open up for this location.
It is estimated that the commencement of the flights will bring in approximately 30,000 travelers every year into New Zealand’s South Island from places like Malaysia, India, China, Japan, Korea, Paris and London. When the frequency of the flights increases to four times a week, the number is expected to go up further to about 70,000 visitors annually. This means more jobs and more business opportunities for the local community.
Although New Zealand has been getting a fair share of tourist interest on a global level, the South Island has received fewer travelers than the rest of the country. With this new flight, it is expected that numbers will rise dramatically. Since the flights are scheduled to be direct flights, they will not interfere with the business of the other airline that provide connections into the South Island from other airports in the region.
Industry officials in New Zealand are all praise for the Christchurch airport authorities and officials who have worked to convince Air Asia X that Christchurch is indeed a viable tourist destination and flying into the location makes good business sense. The Air Asia X fares into the airport are the cheapest international fares that New Zealand has ever had. New Zealanders may be able to acquire return fares into Europe at less than $1000 thanks to this new cheap fare.
To celebrate the launch of the new flights Air Asia X has announced introductory fares of $99 from Christchurch to Malaysia. Since the low cost carrier offers a huge choice in connectivity to Asia (Bangladesh, India, Cambodia, Japan, Iran, Indonesia, Thailand), the Middle East, Europe; travelers from these locations too may be interested in connecting via Christchurch due to the cheap fare that is offered on this sector.
