Air Asia to start six new flights to India this year
The decision comes following the realization that traffic has been growing in the region.
As per the plan, the airline will start operations from Penang to Kolkata on April 28, while its Kuala Lumpur to Mumbai flights will get started on May 6. The airline will follow up these services with Kuala Lumpur-Chennai, Kuala Lumpur-New Delhi, Kuala Lumpur-Bangalore and Kuala Lumpur-Hyderabad flights at a later stage. These apart, there are also plans to operate a Kolkata-Bangkok direct daily flight by the middle of next year. After having kicked off flights to almost all cities in China, it is now India’s turn to see Air Asia flights this year. The airline already flies to four Indian destinations, such as Trichy, Trivandrum, Kolkata and Kochi from Kuala Lumpur.
It has been pointed out by the airline top brass that next round of connecting with other destinations in India will be kicked off with Amritsar, to keep a word given to members of the Sikh community in Southeast Asia. The airline currently carries 27 million people and has 92 aircraft under its fold. The company has ordered another 120 aircraft, which will be delivered before year 2015.
Air Asia currently operates flights to destinations in over 20 countries, and has been focusing on lowering the cost in a bid to stimulate new markets. Elaborating on the airline’s success, Air Asia Chief Executive Antony Fernandes said that decisions like creating new markets such as Trivandrum. Air Asia, with as many as 7,000 staff expects a 23 percent passenger growth this year.
