Air India London-Toronto flights resume to Amritsar via DelhiTravelers from Amritsar have found some relief after Air India’s withdrawn Amritsar-London-Toronto service resumed via Delhi. The move to bring back the service is due to political tastes it seems. The national carrier had withdrawn the service as part of cost-cutting measures and on the ground that the airlines was suffering huge losses in the sector. A memorandum submitted by the delegation to the union minister stated that following discontinuation of the Amritsar-Toronto flight, NRIs from all over the world are resentful. Union minister for civil aviation Praful Patel gave principle clearance to Air India to start resuming the service as early as possible. The union minister also said that domestic terminal at Bathinda would soon begin service, a government spokesperson told. The original Air India flight (AI 188) from Amritsar to London and Toronto started service using a long haul Boeing 777 jet. The service was ceased from last October 31st and originated from Delhi instead, but now the flight arriving at Guru Ram Das International Airport, Amritsar from Toronto would fly to Delhi (AI 187) en route to Toronto. The direct flight means even a halt of around 2 hours at Delhi wouldn’t make the passengers unhappy as its better than arriving at the country capital and catching a flight. Now Air India operates seven direct flights from Delhi to London and to Toronto. The National airline of India before had four flights and carried 1400 passengers each week, the same route. Many passengers are already craving for other carriers to imitate the same. But not all are happy at the re-routing of the flight, BJP MP and ex-Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu expressed his anguish at the diversion and stop of about three hours at Delhi. In fact he demanded an enquiry in to why smaller airports in the country were neglected in favor of the new and huge (eighth largest in the world) T3 terminal at Delhi airport.
