Volvo has said that its expansion plans for India are on track, despite rumors of Ford selling off the brand.
“Ford might (eventually) sell off Volvo, but by when and to whom, I do not know. But there will be no change in our India plan,” Volvo Car India Managing Director Paul de Voijs was quoted as saying.
Volvo has said that it is optimistic about its performance in the top-end auto market segment in India.
The company feels that the luxury market segment will perform better than the general car market.
Volvo plans to roll out its sports utility vehicle, the Volvo XC60, in India, next.
Volvo currently sells 10 cars in India, the Volvo S80, S40, S60, V50, V70, XC90, XC70, C30 and C70.
The company plans to launch 2-3 new car models by the end of 2009.
Since, its entry into the Indian market, in 2007, Volvo has sold 100 cars.
In October 2008, Volvo India launched a variant of its SUV XC90, priced at Rs 58 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
The company also plans to expand its dealerships in India. As of now, Volvo has four dealers in the country, which it plans to increase to 12, by the end of 2009.
The company has dealerships in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, and Hyderabad.
Apart from India, Volvo has its sights set on China too. The Volvo S80L is one of the safest premium cars tailor-made for China and will mark Volvo’s entry in the Chinese premium car market.
The company had recently launched the Volvo S80L in Beijing.
