TVS Motor today launched an automatic scooter in the Indian market, the TVS Wego.

The Wego is available at a price of Rs 42,000. The scooter will be available from January 2010, when mass production would commence. Automatic scooters overtook geared scooters like the Bajaj Chetak and the LML Vespa long back, and have never looked back. Here’s a hat tip to the original Kinetic Honda, which introduced India to automatic gearless scooters!
TVS said that India’s automatic scooter segment is growing at 18 per cent, and currently accounts for 14 per cent of the total two-wheeler sales. The company said that the fuel efficiency of the 100 cc Wego scooter would be around 60 kmpl.

Maximum power produced is 8 bhp at 7500 rpm, and max torque is 8Nm at 5500 rpm, enough for most purposes. There was some rumour going around prior to the launch that this will be a high capacity scooter launch, but seems that was wrong. The again, that might be another scooter that TVS is working on.
The company has spent Rs 50 crore on the development of the Wego.
The Wego scooter launch took alongside the company’s clutch-less motorcycle Jive. TVS said that they plan to launch two vehicles every year from now on.
Talking to the media, TVS head honcho Venu Srinivasan said that the aim of the two vehicle launches is to introduce stress-free riding to the masses with the Wego and the Jive motorcycle.
At this point, we would like to reiterate our point that TVS, like most other auotmobile companies in India, has no clue about what to do with their website. Hours after the announcement, there is no mention on the website about the two launches. There are no press releases about the Wego scooter available online either in the media section!
The last launch from TVS Motor was the twin-spark TVS Flame motorcycle.
