Renault Megane for India rumoured;
Nissan too plans cars for India
Renault Megane, a Logan-based MUV,
and Nissan Livina and Infiniti G35
being considered for India launch.

23 May, 2007
After the success of Mahindra
Logan, the French auto major Renault
is planning to bring to India more of
its models. And when Renault does
that, can Nissan be far behind?
Rumours abound that Renault will bring
in its Megane model into India, both
in two and four-wheel drive options.
The Logan family will be extended to
include a seven-seater MCV based on
the same platform, and maybe even a
hatchback in the future.
Meanwhile reports say that Nissan, the
proposed third partner in the Mahindra-Renault
venture, has said that it will look at
models in the B and C segments,
although it wasn’t clear what brands
and platforms it would likely look at.
It is believed that models like the
Livina, a two-row minivan, and its
sister model, an entry level sedan, as
well as the Infiniti G35 are a part of
Nissan’s strong geographical footprint
spread. And its new markets would
include India.
Company officials have said that the
Livina and the Infiniti are relevant
for the Indian market. However, they
also are quick to add that it may be
too premature to make an announcement
about India. The company plans to
commission a few studies to recognise
India’s growth, it is learnt.
Come 2009, and once the Chennai plant
goes onstream, Nissan will roll out
compacts, it is believed. The company
has in the meantime preferred keeping
to itself whether it will use an
existing small car platform in India
or build something from scratch.
Rumour has it that March/Micra and the
Pino platform stand a chance.
Along with Renault, Nissan may learn
from India on how to acquire cost
competitiveness in other markets. Even
a common platform between the two
majors might become a reality. Indian
customers also have the chance to see
the new X-Trail being launched later
this year, said another report.
