2 June, 2005: If there is a car in India which is truly dreary, it is the current Accent. Oh how I dislike it.
This story is continued below at the serious risk to my life and limb, considering the number of people who have purchased the Hyundai Accent in its various versions. Sure, it is a brilliant car by our standards; the diesel CRDi version gives terrific fuel efficiency and is almost as fast as the petrol version. It is reliable, and Hyundai is decent at after-sales service and the car even offers decent performance overall.
I dislike it, because the car is so typical of your common man. I mean, it is even less offensive that the inoffensive toyota Corolla. The car ahs boring lines all over it; the perfect car for the insurance salesman, I call it.
Well, I have some hope. The new generation Accent is on its way here according to Hyundai. By end-2006, we hear. Hyundai Motor India is investing around 130 million dollars for manufacturing the car in India.
The new accent photos are already available and it definitely is a better looker. Oh, it looks a little like the Toyota Corolla and is probably a mish-mash of several other cars and design cues, but it definitely is better. The new 2006 Accent will be built on a new platform, and engine specifications are still in the realm cosmic mysteries. Pricing will be competitive for sure, Hyundai is good at that.
Here's what little dope we have on the new Accent.
The front end looks a bit like the Corolla, only a little smaller. The rear lights look like the ones on the current Chevrolet Optra. Apart from these, the car is bigger, rounder, taller and nicer.
