Ford has launched a new version of its successful small sedan, the Ford Ikon, with new diesel engine and different looks in India.

New Ford Ikon - front looks much, much better, we think.
The new diesel version of the Ikon would feature Ford’s famous 1400 cc diesel Duratorq engine which already does duty in the Ford Fiesta and Fusion. There is new 1.3 liter ROCAM petrol engine too – but we guess the big news is the launch of a diesel.

New Ford Ikon
Apart from the engne, what has changed, and for the better, are the looks. The old Ford Ikon we had was seriously geeting long in the tooth, looking like something from the 1980s, what with all the new dramatic designs coming to Indian roads. The new design puts the new Ford corporate grille on the front, making it look much more modern and contemporary.

Photo: New Ford Ikon rear with optional spoiler.
Side on, the new Ford Ikon does not look very different from the old version. Butget that optional rear spoiler, and skirts, and the car can look quite different and modern. Rear tail lamps are a bit different, and the front lights are totally new and go well with the new front grille.
What does it not have? Airbags, ABS, EBD, etc etc. Now we are against every car that does not offer airbags, and the Ikon does not seem to offer it even as an option. That said, there are many small cars in India without airbags, and we suspect the lack of an airbag is not going to stop those who fall in love with the new looks and fuel economy of the new diesel Ford Ikon.

The 1.3 liter petrol version of the new Ford Ikon is priced at Rs 4.59 lakhs ex-showroom Delhi, while the diesel is priced at Rs 5.19 lakhs. At this price, the new diesel Ikon can provide good competition to the Suzuki Dzire, as well as the Tata Indigo – after all, the Ikon has been around a long time, and a diesel version may be just what Ford needs to lift up its fortunes in India.
The new diesel Fusion Dura Torq engine is an inline 4 clyunder common rail diesel engine that produces 68 bhp at 4000 RPM. The 68 bhp may not seem really much, but remmeber that the Ikon was always a light car. Add to that, great torque from the diesel engine, and fuel economy, and you may have a winner here in the new Ford Ikon. Maximum torque from the Dura Torq diesel is 160 Nm at 2000 rpm. The new Ford Ikon gets a 5-speed manual transmission.
There are independent McPherson struts with separate sub-frame at the front of the car, while the rear has heavy duty twist-beam with strut-type coil spring / damper units. The steering is power-assisted rack and pinion. Ford claims that the suspension of the new Ikon is a new system developed for the European Ford Fiesta and Ford Ka.
The new Ford Ikon has ventillated disc brakes at the front, and drums at the rear. Reasonable enough for a small sedan. Tyres are radials, 175/70 R13 front and rear.
Front and rear power windows, cup-holders, air conditioning and heater are provided.
Brush steel, Morello, Diamond White, Panther Black, Paprika Red, Platinum and Moondust Silver are the colours on offer for the new Ford Ikon.

Congrats on the New IKON, Not a Great Improvement on the Machine and Looks Though. But ,the Price is competitive against our Indian suzuki Swift Diesel and Dzire models.
Ford Must Bring more Available after Sales and Services and Reduce Spares and Service Costs for this Model if the ywant a BIG SUCCESS.

Hi,
First of all.. cheers tu the new sporty styled ROCAM machine “NEW FORD IKON”. Nice packaging done but still a way behind to catch up with the competetive prices of the Logan & DeZire. Interiors need much improvements like some new looks. Nice headlamp cluster and cheeky spoiler adds to its sporty looks. ford must now concentrate on after sales service and especially about the cost of repairs to make their new arrivals a big hit in the indian market.

hi, here is a good news for the diesel lovers. ford ikon has launched the most advanced dura torq engine which is in fiesta. The pickup is very super and as well as the mileage, expected mileage is 18-19 kmpl in the city conditions in the highway 22. the very best news is the price tag just only 5.19 lacs, when compare to other diesel cars, the ikon is very good choice.

I think the Ford Ikon diesel is good value for money. What would be the on road price in Chennai?
Besides, what is the mileage claimed by the Co. in city conditions and on the Highway?Could somebody educate me on this?

.. i want to buy a swift diesel… but now m lilttle bit confused between this ikon diesel and swift vdi…..
so can anyone suggest wich is better…….
Prassy said on Sunday, November 16, 2008, 17:53
Hi Guy’s
I own and run a for ikon.. I also have a swift VDI guys all i would say is that ikon is a notch above swift in terms of feel quality and build. The engines on both these cars are good. mileage is also fairly decent. But top end speed is in the 150 range. but ikon drives better than a swift on the highways and is so easy in city traffic. where as its a pain to drive the swift in our city roads you always have the fear of scraping the body. One big drawnack with the IKON is the service cost. The service bills are almost un imaginable one definite advice will be to go for the extended warranty at any cost.. except for the service cost Ford ikon is a clear winner in all aspects.

Same old crap, in a new wrap! Though so much noise is being made about the success of smaller cars in this part of the world, still the manufacturers are selling 10-15 yr old junk (specially the awful designs we get to see) in India. I think Hyundai has done some good for the first time by introducing small cars (i10, i20 etc.) which genuinely appear to make sense for India buyers. As for the so called more established players look at the junk they offer, that too at a premium, Ford-Ikon, Endeavour, Maruti-Esteem, Omni, WagonR, Versa, GM-Aveo, Hyundai-Accent, Santro, the list can go on and on.

Hi I checked ford Ikon diesel and the good things in this ford when compared to swift diesel(not desire) are the spacious interiors, being a sedan, same cost and the fiesta engine…..I heard very good about fiesta in terms of mileage and drive quality…………i am going to buy this car……..if you are comparing this with desire………….you are dumb……….its 1.5 lack expensive…….

Sorry,
I have a new Ford FIesta car and its main problem is its ground clearance. wehad a bad experience when we travelled to rough roads of Tamil nadu resteverything is fine. Suzuki’s Desire
and Indigo has a very good ground clearance so they make a better racing machine than us. Our car’s lower BIW had so many Jams in it as it will not be able to clear a relatively large bump with full luggage and 5 persons on board

I recently bought a ford ikon diesel duratorc and pritty happy with the car. I have always driven a Petrol Car so adjusting to a little noisier engine was difficult to start with. My daily drive is around 50 km and i drove a hyndai accent which drank fuel 50 X 22 X 5.5 = 6655!!!!. Which was actually a lot. Shifting to diesel my avg is coming around 18 km/l therefor i am shelling 50 X 22 X (30/18) = 1800.
I have always liked the sporty look of ford ikon and it feels very sturdy . (This is a brand new car so hoping the avg will improve a little).
If i consider the savings arond 5000 Rs permonth (only 22 days) then I am very very very satisfied with my car. I have taken extended warrenty as ppl have told on this forum which will come in handy to tackle the problem of mantainance i.e. I hope so
