MARUTI SMALL CAR FOR EXPORT MARKET

Maruti to export small cars to UAE and South East Asia

July 5, 2007

Maruti Udyog plans to make a mark, with its small cars, in its new and existing export markets.

In new markets, MUL has started exporting the Alto to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and is looking at countries such as Philippines and Indonesia. The company has set an export target of around 2,20,000 units by 2010.

Pitted against big cars in its existing export markets, MUL will take the line that a brand new fuel-efficient vehicle is better and more environment-friendly than those cheap used big cars. The strategy seems to be working for Maruti Udyog, with this fiscal's target of 50,000 units from exports currently on track.

The company, which started off in Saudi Arabia with just 250 cars, now targets over 6,000 units.

During the last financial year, the company had exported as many as 2,072 of its Altos to Saudi Arabia. Similarly, in Morocco where it opened its account with about 200 units, it is looking at selling over 2,000 units, said a report. Besides these nations, Maruti Udyog will see sales of about 11,000
units in Algeria this fiscal and around 6,100 units in Chile, it is expected.
