Luminous Power Technologies plans to launch its electric scooter – possibly, the name would be Lectrix – in November 2008. The Luminous Lectrix will be part of a range of e-bikes that Luminous Technologies, part of the SAR group, will manufacture.
A new company Lectrix Motors Ltd has been set up to manufacture and market Luminous’ range of e-bikes. At the Delhi Auto Expo in Feb 2008, Lectrix Motors Ltd launched two models of e-bikes, e-1 and Starlet, which were priced between Rs 28000 and Rs 29,500.
We are frankly not sure what the name of the electric scooter would be. Lectrix? e-1? Starlet? Something else altogether? What we know for sure is that there will be an electric scooter from Lectrix which might be called well, Lectrix, haha.
For the purposes of this story, and to avoid confusing you and driving you to suicide at this young age, we will continue calling the scooter Lectrix.
The Luminous Lectrix electric will be priced between Rs 22,000 and Rs 35,000. The company hopes to sell 23,000 units by June 2009.
The Lectrix e-scooter will be manufactured at Gagret in Himachal Pradesh. The Gagret plant will have a production capacity of 3000 units per month. The company plans to increase the capacity of the plant to 35,000 units by 2010, if it meets the target of 3000 units per month.

Luminous Power Technologies Founder and CEO Rakesh Malhotra has been quoted as saying that the company has already completed test runs of the Lectrix e-scooter, the research and development for which it took about two years.
Luminous Power Technologies plans to open around 50 exclusive showrooms in 2008, of which 36 are ready.
“Presently, we would be focusing our business in North India only. Most of the outlets are opening next month and they are located in all major cities in North India like Delhi and also in smaller cities like Hisar, Karnal and Meerut,” Malhotra said.
Luminous has also said that it will enter the telecom sector by providing back-end-solutions to various operators.
Malhotra said, “The aim is to provide telecom infrastructure as a turn-key solution. Besides, we will also provide indigenously developed batteries to operators with an aim to reduce diesel consumption.”
As part of these plans, Luminous Power Technologies will construct a Rs 200-crore plant in Himachal Pradesh which will be ready by June 2009.
Luminous is targeting a revenue of about Rs 1800 – 2000 crore by 2009, of which they expect Rs 1000 crore from its e-bike business.
On October 10, 2008 Luminous Power Technologies announced that it would be the prime sponsor for the Delhi Giants, of the Indian Cricket League. After every Delhi Giants league match, Lectrix Motors will give a Lectrix e-bike to the “Man of the Match.”
