Lohia group Oma, Fame electric scooter launched

Lohia Group launched two electric bikes, Oma and Fame, at at the India International Trade Fair in Delhi, on November 14, 2008. The two bikes will be priced at Rs 31,000 (ex-showroom Delhi.)

The prices of both Oma and Fame have been kept the same because they were priced before the tax rebate was offered by the Delhi government.

Like other electric bike manufacturers, Lohia Auto Industries (LAI) said that the eco-friendly vehicles were developed keeping in mind high fuel prices, environment degradation, and depleting fossil fuel resources.

Chief Executive Officer Ayush Lohia, LAI, “We have priced it in such a way that common people can also afford it.”

Lohia Group President V.K. Gupta said that the e-bikes, Oma and Fame, were manufactured in technical collaboration with Germany. The Oma and Fame come with a 250 Watt motor rechargeable battery that can also be charged using an inverter or generator. More electric scooters in India

The company has said that the Oma and Fame can go over 50 km per charge at a cost of only 10 paise a km. The two bikes have a top speed of 25 km an hour. Gupta also said that no registration or license would be required to drive the Oma and Fame. BSA had launched 5 electric scooters recently.

LIA aims to sell 20,000 units in 2008-2009 and ramp that up to 21000 units in 2009-2010.

LAI’s Kashipur manufacturing facility in Uttarakhand, has a capacity of two lakh units per annum. LAI plans to set up another facility in the same campus. It has set aside Rs 150 crore for the development of the new plant. The company also plans to set up a 150-dealer network by the end of 2009.

LAI CEO Lohia said that the company aims to export 20,000 units to neighbouring countries, such as China, Thailand, and Indonesia.

Lohia Group plans to launch three more two-wheers and one three-wheeler in 2009.
