Hyundai has finally bit the bullet and followed Maruti with a price hike announced today for its popular i10 model, as well as for the entry level hatch Santro Xing and sedan Accent.

This is not something Hyundai looked forward to, for sure. Car purchases have dipped in 2009, and no car manufacturer would want to raise priced at this time. However, the manufacturers seem to think that they are left with no option at all. So it is Maruti first, now Hyundai and will soon be followed by GM India.

Hyundai has said that the new prices for the i10, Accent and Santro would be 1.2 to 3 per cent higher than the earlier ones. In rupee terms, that translates to Rs 3,600 to Rs 14,500 approx across all variants. Rising input costs are the reason for the price rise.

Hyundai Santro Xing, which has served the company well over more than a decase would see a price rise of Rs 3,600 to Rs 5,160 through the variants. Hyundai i10, which has held well on its own and is Hyundai’s first hit car after the Santro, would see its prices rise by Rs 3,900 to 7,600 from the bottom to the top end variants. The car’s popularity should see it doing well despite the price hike.

Hyundai Accent sedan is now costlier by by Rs 14,000 approx.

There is no price hike for the recently launched Hyundai i20, or the new Hyundai Verna variants – obviously, Hyundai has accounted for the rising input costs with them as they were only launched recently.

In 2008, in an effort to kickstart the automobile market in India, the government had announced a 4 % cut in CENVAT which saw car prices being cut. Now, they go back up a little again.
