How Tata Nano project will benefit Gujarat

The Tatas’ decision to move the Tata Nano project to Gujarat has led to much cheer in the state. No doubt, the project is bound to benefit Gujarat in many tangible and intangible ways.

Benefits to component manufacturers and Vendors

The small scale industrial units, in Gujarat, that manufacture and supply car components, such as casting, forging, and bearings, will get a decided fillip.

The president of Rajkot Engineering Association Bhavesh Patel, has been quoted as saying that the ancillary industry will do so well that he expects even car component manufacturing units from other states to move to Rajkot and Ahmedabad.

With the Tato Nano project moving to Sanand in Gujarat, local component manufacturers will save about Rs 16 lakh per month as transportation charges, for nearly 400 tonnes of spare parts that they sent to Singur.

Vendors in Gujarat will also benefit from the Tata Nano mother plant shift to Gujarat. Like the component manufacturers, vendors will be able to save 2% CST on the components. Earlier the vendors had to pay Rs 4-5 per kg as transportation cost. Now that the plant has moved to Sanand, vendors will have to pay only 50 paise per kg.

New investment opportunities and positive sentiment in Gujarat

The Tatas moving to Gujarat has also made a difference to the investment sentiment in India. It has also upped Gujarat’s perceptions as an investor-friendly state, which is expected to attract even more investment. Although Gujarat was not keen on providing concessions to industry, it made an exception in the case of the Tata Nano project, given the competition between the states to grab the prestigious project and the opportunity to create a good investment climate in Gujarat.

Gujarat already has impeccable credentials when it comes to business and industry. A recent study by the RBI has said that in 2007-2008, Gujarat attracted the maximum investment in the country and has 100 projects – worth Rs.624.42 billion ($13.85 billion) – in the implementation stage. The Tata Nano project will only strengthen Gujarat’s hold on new investments. Currently big business houses like Reliance Industries, Aditya Birla Group, Essars and Adani and global conglomerates, such as Matsushita, ABB, Shell and Bombardier have made their home in the state.

Benefit to real estate market

Meanwhile, land prices have shot up in Gujarat, in and around Chharodi in Ahmedabad district. The overall spurt in land prices in Ahmedabad district is expected to put an end to the recession in the realty market.

Prices in Chharodi have gone up to Rs 8-10 lakh per bigah, up from Rs 3-4 lakh per bigah. In Sanand, land prices are Rs 3000 per sq yard, up from the Rs 2500 per sq yard price before the announcement about the Tatas moving to Gujarat was made.

In Sachana and Virochandnagar, agricultural land prices have shot up from Rs 3-5 lakh per bigha to Rs 10 lakh per bigha. Of course, realistic prices will be lower but the overall price increase will happen. This will not deter investors who see a good long-term investment opportunity.

Additional jobs and training opportunities

Apart from the Nano plant, the Tatas will also build a research institute in agriculture and a marine biology institute. All of these plans will be benefical for Gujarat and lead to further development and growth in the state.

The Tata Nano project is estimated to provide 10,000 additional jobs in the state.

The Tata Nano will be rolled out between January – March 2009 instead of the October – November 2008 launch period decided earlier.

On October 7, 2008 Ratan Tata announced that the Tata Nano project would be shifted to Gujarat from Singur in West Bengal. As per the deal, the Tatas will set up the Nano motherplant on 1,100 acres at Sanand, about 35 kilometers from Ahmedabad.

Initially, the Tata Nano mother plant will produce 2,50,000-3,00,000 cars per annum. The mother plant would have the capacity to expand its production to 5,00,000 cars in the next few years.

The Tatas also have other plans for the Tata Nano plant. The Tatas will build electric cars and CNG variants from the mother plants. They also plan to set up an auto academy and ITIs (industrial training institutes) to meet resource reequirements for the mother plant.
