Hey, Corolla lovers can rejoice, finally. The days of your Civic envy are pretty much over. The Corolla Altis has just been launched in New Delhi.

Important facts first.

Yes, it is a much improved car. If you like the Corolla, you are going to love the Corolla Altis. External shape of the car is less like a ship now, though not as sleek as a Honda Civic. But there are many more things to compensate for that now.

Price

The new Corolla Altis comes in three models now. There is the economy model 1.8 G Manual transmission, 1.8 GL Manual with all the goodies, and the 1.8 VL with those goodies plus an auto transmission. The Altis’ price ex-showroom Delhi will be between Rs 10.83 lakh and Rs 12. 86 lakhs. Add around Rs 60,000 to it for an on-road price.

Toyota says that they plan to sell around 2,000 models of the Corolla Altis a month – a possibility, as those who did not want the Civic and the old model Corolla will now go for this car.

The new Corolla Altis is lower and wider than the Corolla it replaces, itself quite a spacious car. The car looks a lot more purposeful than the Corolla it replaces. You get a cool headlamp washer to keep those lights clean, and also sensors which can automatically turn the lights on when it gets dark. There is an electrochromatic inner rear view mirror which turns dark to deal with those blinding lights at night. Corolla says its a first in class, but I think the Civic has something similar. Not sure on that though.

On the looks front, all models of the Corolla Altis come with 15 inch, 7 spoke alloy wheels. Not very sporty, but classy – I guess that is where the Corolla market is.

The Altis’ interiors are a sea change. This was one of the main reasons why many loved the Civic. The new Altis interiors look thoroughly modern. Modern, not space-age. But then you get a much more coccooned cahin the the Corolla always offered. The interiors are so easy on the eyes – just look at the photos of the driver’s cockpit and the seating, and its bloody tempting.

The lower stance, good ground clearance and ABS With EBD (on all models) should making driving the Corolla Altis a pleasure. Driver’s seat with lumbar support is available in the top two models. The 1.8 G model has manual adjustments for driver’s seat height, while 1.8 GL and 1.8 VL models have electric height adjusters.

Colours

The six colours on offer for the new corolla altis includes silver metallic, simpson red, white pearl mica metallic, silver metallic, super white and black mica.

Height is reduced, but only a little and you are not going to mind that unless you are really, really tall.

All models of the Altis come with outside rear view mirror with integrated turn signals.

Other points to note

HID Headlamps with Retractable Washers not available in 1.8 G model.
