Fiat CNG Punto for India in 2010

There is going to be a CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) coming from Fiat India in 2010. While initially it was not clear which model this would be, it was later confirmed by the Hindu Businessline that the new car would be a CNG variant of the Fiat Punto hatchback.

Generally, we have stayed away from news stories about premium and luxury vehicles in India.  The logic always was that very people would be able to afford them in any case and if they did, they would hardly make up their minds by reading articles on the Internet.  However, recently we have come to realize that there is a large audience out there that wants to read about these cars irrespective of whether they can afford them or not. We have been hearing occasional rumors about an upcoming vehicle from Mahindra for a while.  We have talked about the limited, but pent up, demand for a smaller suv to replace the Maruti Gypsy.  However, the only vehicle which even tries to be a mini SUV is the recently launched Premier Rio.  But that is a little too small and too unsophisticated to become a hit for that audience.

There is one thing to be said about Maruti Suzuki - they do not give up easily. Every time Maruti has tried to sell something in the mid-size segment, they have had to struggle. Whereas, bring in a Honda - any Honda - price it a lakh rupees above a similar car, and sales shoot up. Such is fate.
