BENTLEY AND EU REGULATIONS

Bentley to be environment friendly

15 September, 2007

In a bid to adhere to the EU’s prescribed norms, Volkswagen's luxury car division Bentley plans to make its models more environment friendly. The company is said to be working out the details of the plan.

The auto maker will decide in spring 2008 on what is to be done on this front. It is a known fact that Bentley's powerful models traditionally consume large amount of fuel, with the Coupe Continental GT guzzling an average of more than 17 litres of fuel per 100 km. Road reviews have said that the car emits around 396 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre, far above a proposed EU regulation limiting CO2 emissions to 120 grams per km by 2012.

Bentley, which is looking at posting annual sales of 10,000 vehicles for the first time this year, may bank on greener versions to be a popular player in
its segment.

Meanwhile, reports from South Africa said that Volkswagen South Africa had to stop production at its Uitenhage plant following a motor-manufacturing strike. Most of its 4000 production employees at the plant had to be sent home as the strike action by the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) had a major impact.

The strike is seen as threatening jobs and export orders in the future. Workers in the motor industry are demanding a 9 per cent wage hike, while
employers are offering 8.5 per cent.
