March 25:
When Hamara Bajaj takes to four wheels, Tatas better watch their back! On March 25, Bajaj Auto, the largest three-wheeler maker in the country, said it is planning to enter the four-wheeler market with small cars. Bajaj says that it is planning to change from a two and three-wheeler maker to become a manufacturer of 4 -wheelers too.
Bajaj has taken on the challenge of Ratan Tata's ambitious Rs 1 lakh car which is still waiting in the wings. Bajaj believes that a two and three-wheeler maker will be better positioned to manufacture a low-cost car than a conventional carmaker. "There is little difference between a 1 litre engine used in a motorcycle and the 800 cc engine of a Maruti," said Bajaj Auto MD designate Rajiv Bajaj.
According to Mr Bajaj, it wont be tough to make a car for Rs 1 lakh. The tough part will be making money out of it. "You have to make the car and make money as well," he quipped.
Bajaj dismissed any chance of Bajaj tying up with Tata for the Rs 1 lakh car. "We are too alike to attract," he said.
