Hyundai Elantra Yuedong, a new sedan especially created for the Chinese market, is set to roll out. Hyundai is positioning the three-box Yuedong sedan against the Toyota Corolla, Volkswagen Jetta and Buick Excelle.
Hyundai will price the Elantra Yuedong below the Corolla and the Jetta. Hyundai says that the cost and fuel efficiency of the Elantra Yuedong will draw more customers from the 25-35 age group.

The Elantra Yuedong will be a spruced-up version of the Hyundai Elantra, already in sale across several countries including China. Hyundai, which is already selling the Sonata and the Elantra in the Chinese market, is facing a decline in sales. The company, which launched the Genesis luxury car on South Korea recently, is planning to improve sales with the Yuedong.

The Elantra Yuedong will come with a 1.6-litre or 1.8-litre engine. Hyundai is planning to price the Elantra Yuedong in the 99,800 yuan ($14,250) - 129,800 yuan range. Beijing Hyundai, which makes the Elantra Yuedong, plans to sell one lakh units of the car in the first year.
Hyundai is aware that it has a lower brand profile in China compared to bigger names like Toyota and General Motors. However, the company feels that the Elantra Yuedong, with sunroofs and leather seats in the higher variants, will help create a niche of its own in China.
Beijing Hyundai recently set up a $790 million factory in China to manufacture the Hyundai Elantra Yuedong. The factory has the capacity to build 2 lakh Elantra Yuedongs an year, which will be later increased to 3 lakh.
