Chana dreams of better Chinese imported car sales in SA
16 May, 2008 BY OUR AUTOMOBILE CORRESPONDENT South Africa’s Chinese importer Chana South Africa is reportedly weighing options on locally assembling cars from the communist nation. According to a report, the company is looking at manufacturing in Southern Africa within the next two year period. Chana is manufactured by Changan Automobile, China's fourth-largest vehicle manufacturer. The company, which had been incorporated two years ago, had to sell 20,000 units a year in South Africa and the rest of Africa to make local production viable, the report added. According to statistics, the company managed sales of only over 3000 vehicles last year. The report added that Chana aims to sell 5000 vehicles in the South African market this year, he said. It is being seen that the unveiling
of the Benni, Chana's first entry into
the local passenger vehicle market,
would help in pushing up sales and
this could lead to better numbers
during year 200. The Benni, a small
63-kw entry segment vehicle which
sports a price tag of R77 900, was
recently unveiled at the Durban Motor
show. The parent Chinese manufacturer
looks at South Africa as its stepping
stone into Africa nd has already been
noticed for its Star bakkie range.
