Berlin-based Bombardier Transportation has delivered the first new Docklands Light Railway (DLR) cars to Transport for London which will be used to provide services for the 2012 Olympic Games and DLR’s future extensions.
The first three cars of orders
totalling 55 new vehicles were greeted
at a ceremony by the Mayor of London,
Ken Livingstone. The remaining
vehicles
will be delivered during 2008 and
2009, it said.
Docklands is the UK’s first fully automated light rail system, which already transports over 65 million passengers a year, a number which is expected to rise significantly in the coming years as the system is further extended and enhanced.
The deliveries form part of two orders for the new cars which were signed in May 2005 and June 2006 respectively, the combined value of which were £100 million. The automatically guided and driverless system already utilises 94 Bombardier cars which were supplied between January 1991 and March 2002. The additional 55 cars will significantly increase capacity on the system.
The new cars are distinctive in
that the exterior design is
streamlined and the vehicles feature
enlarged windows. The cars also
feature technical enhancements to the
original design. Docklands units have
proved to be extremely popular and
reliable and the trains will begin
running as three-car
units, rather than the current two-car
sets, from year 2010.
