15th August 2005: Druk Air, the national carrier of Bhutan, has increased its
number of flights between Kolkata and Gaya to seven from the present five flights
a week. The carrier is also planning to expand its operations to Chennai, Mumbai
and Guwahati by 2006.
The increase in number of flights to Gaya follows a recent bilateral air services
meeting between the governments of both the countries, under which the traffic
entitlements of designated airlines were increased from the existing 12
frequencies to 49.
The carrier also intends to use Kolkata as an intermediary point from
Paro-Kolkata-Bangkok and three flights between Paro and New Delhi with onward
services to Kathmandu.
The airline had purchased two A319 aircraft in December 2004 and operates with
94 economy and 20 business class seats.
Earlier, the airline had decided to increase its the total number of its flights
between the two countries from 12 a week to 49. The limitation of 1,020 seats a
week was also lifted.
Besides flights to and from Delhi, Kolkata and Gaya, the carrier would also be
flying to new destinations like Mumbai, Chennai and Guwahati, linking it to the
Himalayan kingdom.
The carrier would be entitled to seven flights a week to all these destinations. It
can also operate up to 14 flights a week to Gaya. At present, Druk Air’s flight operations include thrice a week to Delhi via
Kathmandu and five times a week to Kolkata with onward rights to Bangkok.
