AirTran Airways has life-saving technology to treat sudden cardiac arrest during flights

AirTrans Airways uses automated external defbrillator.

PRNEWSWIRE

11 September, 2005: AirTran Airways has announced that it will become the first airline to equip its aircraft with the Philips HeartStart FRx, a new automated external defibrillator (AED) that treats both children and adults who suffer sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), one of the country's leading medical emergencies and causes of death. The airline has purchased more than 45 HeartStart FRx Defibrillators, which will be installed on its Boeing 737 fleet. AirTran Airways is one of America's largest low-fare airlineand operates over 500 daily flights to 49 destinations.

"As safety is our first priority, we've carried other AEDs in the past, but this is the first time we have a device capable of treating small children, with a more appropriate therapy," said Jean-Pierre Dagon, AirTran Airways' director of corporate safety. "Unfortunately, medical emergencies often occur when our planes are in the air and where immediate access to medical facilities is not available. This new product allows our inflight crews to utilize the latest technology to care for passengers regardless of their age."

The HeartStart FRx Defibrillator will be used to apply defibrillation therapy, or an electric shock, to the heart of a person suffering sudden cardiac arrest. The technology makes it practical for minimally-trained lay persons, as well as emergency first responders, to deliver time-critical defibrillation and CPR therapy to victims of SCA.

Key components of the HeartStart FRx include:

* An Infant/Child Key, designed to administer time-critical
defibrillation therapy for infants and children less than 8 years old
and 55 lbs.

* Patented voice coaching for adult and infant/child CPR.

* Both verbal and visual pads placement instructions.
