Elections to four states – Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan
and Chhattisgarh - will be held on December 1 and elections to
the Mizo assembly will be held on November 20. Latest update:
All opinion polls indicate unanimously that Digvijay Singh will
lose Madhya Pradesh in the forthcoming elections. Unfortunately
for him, after riding high till the beginning of this year, he
has been foiled by the combination of power and electricity.
This was quite unexpected for Digvijay Singh, apparently. These
days, in interviews, he appears quite pained at the thought. Of
course, the chief minister has not lost his bravado, and can be
seen cnfidetly asserting that he is still going to hold on to
the state. It seems Digvijay focused on something whcih does
not return the electoral dividends. People either need and
emotive issue, or they need something they can touch and fee.
The touch-feel factor of good roads and good electricity is,
apparently, stronger than the decentralisation of power and
higher literacy rates that Digvijay focused on. It is debatable
what is more important for Madhya Pradesh, but literacy and
better health indices do not impress the average short-term
memory citizen the way a pot-holed road hits you. Sad for you,
Diggy. In fact, it is doubly sad, as his replacement could be
Uma Bharati, who is hardly impressive in anything other than
being happy about the demolition of Babri Masjid. By voting for
better performance, the people may actually get nothing more
than a few more temples and communal strife. Let's wait and see
about this one. If Digvijay wins, he would have learnt his
lesson too - that Madhya Pradesh needs feel-good achievements
too.
In the Madhya Pradesh state assembly elections 2003, the state will witness a direct fight between BJP and
Congress. However, the Bahujan Samaj Party in Madhya Pradesh
seems to have reached a tacit understanding with the Congress to
support in the state assembly elections. This could make the
going very difficult for BJP.
The current chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, Digvijay Singh,
will face off against Uma Bharati of BJP in the state assembly
elections, to be held on December 1, 2003.
Madhya Pradesh elections are going to be pretty borderline -
Digvijay was known to have the upper hand till recently, and
then a spate of controversies - power problems, beef
politics, roads - sudenly took the wind out of his
sails. The BJP brought i Uma Bharati specifically to take on
Digvijay and Congress. The aggressive sanyasin seems to be
giving Diggy Raja a tough fight in the state assembly elections.
The India Today survey conducted recently indicated that
Congress will lose the Madhya Pradesh state assembly elections.
However, as 2003 nears to a close, the lead seems to bounce back
from one side to the other. The possible support of Mayavati to
the chief minister could also throw a spanner in the works for
BJP in the election.
Watch this space for more updates on the forthcoming the
state assembly elections.
